Is a travel baseball deposit refundable?

Sometimes, and only under the conditions the team actually wrote down. There is no general rule that a travel baseball deposit or “commitment fee” is refundable. The answer is usually spread across a fee table, a registration line, and a policy paragraph. This guide shows where to look. It explains how to read a team’s stated terms; it is not legal advice.

Separate the charges first

  • Tryout or evaluation fee: pays for the evaluation itself and is commonly a different charge from the season.
  • Commitment or deposit: secures a roster spot and is often credited toward the season fee. Confirm whether it is inside the season fee before adding anything up.
  • Volunteer holdback: a conditional amount tied to completing volunteer hours, not automatically part of the season price.

In the 2026 Minneapolis Millers schedule, the $200 commitment was included in the $750 season fee. In the 2026 Chaska Hawks program PDF, a $450 volunteer holdback with a $1 initial charge sat outside the $650 season fee. Treating either as a generic “deposit” produces bad math.

The five clauses that decide refundability

  1. The trigger that ends refunds. Look for language such as “once team formation begins.” In the Millers example, the commitment became non-refundable after team formation started.
  2. The no-offer case. Some programs refund the commitment if no roster spot is offered. That is a different situation from a family changing its mind.
  3. The exact date or event. “Before the season” is not a date. Ask for the calendar deadline in writing.
  4. What happens to the remaining balance. A non-refundable deposit does not automatically mean the whole season fee is owed; check how payment schedules and withdrawal are handled.
  5. Conditional amounts. Ask how a volunteer holdback or initial $1 charge is settled, refunded, or retained if hours are incomplete.

What to ask before you pay

  • Which charges are refundable, until which exact date or event?
  • If my child is not placed on a roster, what is returned and when?
  • Is the commitment credited against the season fee, and is any amount charged on top of it?
  • If we withdraw after team formation, what is still owed?
  • How are volunteer obligations and any holdback resolved?

Keep the written answer next to the offer. If a term is unclear or missing, treat it as unresolved rather than assuming the favorable reading. Chaska’s detailed refund policy was not confirmed in our sample, which is exactly the kind of gap to close before paying.

Want this done on your two actual offers?

Before the Roster compares two real travel baseball offers or program documents for a one-time $59. You get confirmed, conditional, and unknown costs separated, source references for every figure, schedule and deposit conditions, and the questions still worth asking. One revision is included, and the 48-hour target starts once payment and both teams’ documents are complete. We do not rank coaching quality, scout players, or predict playing time.
